How many dogs and cats visit Harrison Memorial in a year?
11,163 dogs and cats
How many neuter/spay surgeries do you perform?
4,269 spay/neuter surgeries
How many pet owners would qualify for Harrison service but don’t take advantage of it?
Due to the way clients are qualified at Harrison Memorial, there is no way to know with absolute certainty how many don’t take advantage of the services. However, there are 262,854 people in the six county Denver Metro Area who live below the poverty level, with nearly 100,000 of those individuals living in Denver itself. Presumably, most if not all of these people would qualify for Harrison Memorial’s services. Additionally, there are no income qualifications for spay/neuter procedures, so all 2,354,240 people in the Denver Metro Area qualify to have their pets spayed or neutered at Harrison Memorial.
How many pets’ lives do you think you save in a year?
While emergencies and seriously ill patients are fairly common at Harrison Memorial, there is no special record keeping status for these patients as opposed to all other patients. However, we believe that preventative care is essential to maintaining animal health and welfare, so in a sense, all animals at Harrison Memorial receive life saving care.
According to Denver Metro Shelter Alliance statistics, 62,574 animals were taken in to shelters in the Denver Metro Area last year. Of these animals, 19,326 were euthanized—32 percent of all animals euthanized came to the shelter as healthy or treatable animals. Additionally, the Rocky Mountain Alley Cat Alliance (RMACA) estimates the population of feral cats is 125,000 in the Denver Metro Area. Harrison Memorial places heavy emphases on the importance of spay/neuter to avoid this type of unnecessary euthanasia and homeless animal population.
